I chose a dry stick, a long branch of a former tree, as my partner. It was a metaphor for my thoughts about roots and detachment from them. Initially, I worshipped the ability of this branch to hold on to and grow into the earth with its roots. But in the process of practice, the opposite thought also emerged: the dry stick would never be filled with life again. I could feel its fragility, its inflexibility: its whole essence told me that any force would break it. In our duet with her, I felt myself alive, I felt my ability to change, to feel, to see, to choose. I am the root — the one from which the shoots will grow.
