society of ballet
The beauty and virtuosity of classical ballet, the almost inhuman sacrifices behind a perfect performance, the frontal, flat image the viewer is confronted with — this is how the Russian state presents itself today. The revival and new appreciation of national traditions ignores otherness and alternative perspectives. The disciplined body of ballet dancers, weaned on itself, reminds us of post-Soviet society as a whole, like a micro-model. Can the deconstruction of classical ballet patterns be compared to the release of inherited boundaries in the totalitarian (and post-Soviet) body?
